Mount a WaterPORT on a platform roof rack without guesswork. Check rack compatibility, confirm you have the Universal Mount Plate, and torque the steel mount correctly.

Quick answer

Use the Platform Rack Mount only after confirming your platform rack is compatible and that you have the Universal Mount Plate, then tighten the supplied carriage bolts in stages and check the tank for movement before your first trip.

Why the Universal Mount Plate is the first thing to check

The Platform Rack Mount is the steel bracket that attaches to your platform rack, but it does not replace the Universal Mount Plate. If you already own a WaterPORT mount plate, you can reuse it; if not, order the plate with the rack mount so you are not stuck mid-install.

This is the most common source of a stalled install: the rack mount arrives, the platform rack is ready, and the tank has nothing to lock into. Confirm the plate before you start loosening anything.

Where the fit check can fail on popular platform racks

The mount is listed as fitting Prinsu, Front Runner, Echotune, SSO, and Wood Grain Warrior platform racks. That list is a starting point, not a guarantee for every slot spacing or accessory bar on those racks.

If your rack uses non-standard crossbars, thick powder coating, or an accessory channel that sits proud of the deck, the supplied 2 1/4x1 inch carriage bolts may be too short or the bracket may not sit flush. Test-fit the bracket before tightening anything and plan for a trip to the hardware store if the bolts do not fully engage.

How tight is tight enough

Steel mounts tolerate firm torque, but the WaterPORT tank and the rack surface do not. Tighten the carriage bolts evenly in a cross pattern and stop when the bracket stops moving under hand pressure.

Over-tightening one bolt first can tilt the bracket and make the tank sit crooked, which shows up later as a loose tank at speed. Check for a gap between the bracket and the rack before you call it done.

Step-by-step platform rack mount setup

  1. Confirm the Universal Mount Plate is on hand: Check that you have the Universal Mount Plate that the WaterPORT tank locks into. The Platform Rack Mount attaches the plate to the rack; it does not replace it. If the plate is missing, pause the install and order it before removing any rack hardware.
  2. Dry-fit the bracket on the platform rack: Set the steel mount on the rack in the position where you want the tank, without bolts. Check that it sits flat and that the tank will not overhang the rack edge or block a tie-down point. Mark the bolt holes with a pencil so the bracket goes back in the same spot after you thread the hardware.
  3. Test the supplied carriage bolts: Slide the 2 1/4x1 inch carriage bolts through the bracket and rack channel. They should pass through cleanly and show at least a few threads below the rack for the locking nuts. If the bolts bottom out or barely reach, source longer hardware before tightening rather than forcing the nut.
  4. Tighten in a cross pattern: Thread the washers and locking nuts by hand, then tighten diagonally across the bracket in small increments. Stop when the bracket is firmly seated and the tank plate does not rock. Recheck the gap between bracket and rack after the first bolt; a tilted bracket means you tightened one corner too far.
  5. Seat the tank and check for movement: Lock the WaterPORT tank into the Universal Mount Plate and push it side to side and front to back. Any visible flex means the bracket or plate needs another look before you drive. Do this check empty, then again with the tank filled, since the added weight exposes a loose mount.
  6. Re-torque after the first trip: After your first drive with the tank mounted, recheck the locking nuts and the plate connection. Vibration and temperature changes can loosen hardware that felt tight in the driveway. Keep the hardware check in your pre-trip routine so a loose nut never becomes a roadside problem.

Product facts

  • Platform Rack Mount: Steel mount designed for platform racks including Prinsu, Front Runner, Echotune, SSO, and Wood Grain Warrior. Start by matching your rack brand to that list so you do not modify a bracket that was never meant for your crossbars.

  • Platform Rack Mount: Includes 2 1/4x1 inch carriage bolts, locking nuts, and washers, but extra hardware may be needed for some racks. Lay out the supplied hardware before installation and buy longer bolts or spacers in advance if your rack channel is deeper than standard.
